This is the second interview with a member of the leading scholars on Gay Marriage and Same Sex Blessings. The Rt Reverend Marc Andrus here (Episcopal Church), Bishop of the Diocese of California (San Francisco Bay Area) talk on the subject. In a half-hour telephone interview from Bishop Marc spoke about faith in God and God’s attitude toward gay marriage (“… God judges not as man judges, people judge the appearance, but God sees the human heart “) and writer. This article notes that the main theme of his vision is reflected in its last report, “a just and peaceful society.” The next interview with Senior Rabbi Stephen Pearce of Temple Emanuel-El in San Francisco, the second largest temple reform in the United States. Five-part series continues in the present. This is an interview with Bishop Marc, the answer is in italics.
Where you at Episcopal religious spectrum? Progressive, liberal, conservative? What does this mean for you?
I will be in the progressive wing of the Episcopal Church. The word progressive has a direct link to the tradition of the word. Well understood, the tradition is the power that comes from the past and move into the future. And in the best tradition of positive values and notions of time and place of sweeping forward and give them a new moment in history.
Where is the Anglican Diocese of California to go with the Blessing of Same Sex and gay marriage? Does the Diocese of California support the measure at the national General Convention about this? Contains a statement formulated about this? If your comments and responses to questions about the state wide your pastoral letter on gay marriage?
At the recent General Convention, the legislative assembly every three years for the whole Episcopal Church, were among the many laws passed by two, to the inclusion of LGBT people. Together these two decisions affirm that all people have access to the full life of the church.
If there’s one key biblical vision that supports gay marriage and Same Sex Blessings, please give examples of biblical and explain some of your vision about the interpretation? Who else shares this sensibility and understanding, we may know or recognize?
The story of the anointing of David by Samuel, in which he said editorially that God does not judge the judges as judges men, the man with the appearance, but God sees the human heart. When the Episcopal Church is a human couples seek blessings of the church in their relationship with our humble attempt to see test how God sees, certain types of shows – love, loyalty, forgiveness, unity, humility – all of which the Episcopal Church hold important than external considerations.
What do you recommend reading the book that leads readers to an understanding of the attitudes and your report Gay Marriage & Same Sex Blessings support?
Martin Luther King: The Hero Inconvenient by Vincent Harding
, which Harding is the author of the sermons of the famous King’s Riverside Church preached, explained how the King’s to develop a vision of peace and consists of many poverty good global decline, while King was still alive and has languished since his death. Trajectory of the story is actually in the direction of justice, and justice for all.

They introduced the Same Sex Blessing, and if so, will you tell us some of the words you use? Where did you do that?
Yes I have. It is a blessing, not a marriage. Episcopal Church does not have a rite for same-sex marriage. Our prayer book is not the actual rite. The couple married at the courthouse when the law is impossible to do so. I did a ritual blessing that has been made. It was a great ceremony. I have given another blessing of same-sex unions, in both cases they were first married in the civil sector. Both were performed at Grace Cathedral. In one case it was in the maze. On the other was in the nave, the main central part of the cathedral.
What you should write to the Pastoral Letter of Gay Marriage & Blessing of Same Sex and Leave a good view of political or religious or political. Of course, he has a political dimension. Is there something in the Bible, think of a letter to the people in the diocese you start writing?
That’s politics and religion. It is a religion. This is why I say that. What I urge the Diocese of California to do than to have all marriages, gay or straight, carried out by civil authorities. That would be like in France, people go to court and judge who led the civil part, and they come to church to have a religion section. This is for gay and straight. The reason I wrote the pastoral letter is the idea that the Church is true, as a function of the church, not as a means to bring the State.
There are some parts
Bible. One is, you might say to the judge is not a problem in the Bible, and the understanding that God judges. And the positive statements in the Bible that God judges on important characteristics than non-essential features. People judge appearance, while God sees the human heart.
important characteristics of marriage is reciprocity, loyalty, patience, honesty, forgiveness, and this we understand the essence of marriage. While other characteristics may be important in a person’s self-identity, but can not at the center of the definition of marriage.
In a pastoral letter to you, ask your pastor at their local church with the power of the sacrament of marriage fail with their parishioners. This is to get married in church and in Christ. Is this the way I have explained it? If not, you explain that?
people have been asked to get married at the civil authority and blessing of the church. Where is the sacrament of marriage in service? The Eucharist is still there, the bishop is placed. What if we leave a part of the country? If the cleric is a marriage, they will act as an agent of the state. The only part of the plot as we make it a part in the beginning when the couple in marriage his own entry, and if someone objected to the marriage. If you leave it, it is a strange conclusion to say that the sacrament has been removed from service.
If there are words that you would recommend for the implementation of the Same Sex Blessing, we, they said. We extract all of them or phrase or something. Where in the Bible, is supported, and if you see this as part of the Social Gospel, please tell us something about the sense of the social gospel, that you will support this? Recommend specific Bible readings for gay couples (man and man, woman and woman), and in their relationship, either civil unions or gay marriage, there are other readings or meditation on biblical texts do you recommend?
Social Gospel can be said when we pursue justice and reconciliation in church and the world. In the church, the implications of baptism, the radical implications of baptism, if followed, lead the church a more accurate reflection of the Kingdom of God to be. What is another word for a just and peaceful society.
PS:
In a climate of controversy over gay marriage in California, United States, Bishop Marc Andrus reflect ‘pastoral letters views on gay marriage pros California Supreme Court and described the reaction to the ruling ECJ of Episcopalians in the San Francisco Bay Area. The letter, to fight in preparation for gay marriage as they were written before the proposition passed the country and said not distributed to gay marriage in California: Here is the text of the pastoral letter, although written before the Lambeth reveals Rt. Reverend attitude and direction of the Diocese of California:
pastoral letter What same-sex marriage
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
I welcome the decision of the California Supreme Court asserted the fundamental right to marry people of all. I write now the road to this decision, we support our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender brothers and sisters, and continue to strengthen our witness to love of God, including the recommended usage.
clergy and laity in the diocese have the rights of LGBT people and their full inclusion in our church for more than forty years. Today we travel by foot:
Bringing the testimony of our LGBT brothers and sisters at the Lambeth Conference this summer, the war against the ballot initiative this November that attempt, the right was taken recently by the California Supreme Court acknowledges the primary role in summer the General Convention to bring our marriage practices and theology in line with our fundamental baptismal theology
too long has fallen the burden of proof to those marginalized., the burden of inequality in the Church have been brought, and we state Supreme Court decision has given us the opportunity to level the playing field.
For this purpose, the Diocese of California seeks to provide, by advocacy and example, a way forward for the Episcopal Church, that marriage of same-sex couples some of our official marriage rites, without distinction. Although the Episcopal Church does not have canonical rites for same-sex marriage, it is our goal that all couples will <-! . Next Page -> treated equally by the Church because they are equally loved by God
So I offer the following pastoral guidelines:
I urge you to encourage all couples, regardless of orientation, to follow the pattern first married in a secular service and then blessed in the Episcopal Church. I will publicly urge all couples should folgen.Denn for this pattern now, three rituals for experimental purposes under the pastoral guidance of the bishop was approved by a resolution in 2007 the Diocese of the Convention (see annex), adopted, all the pairs (again, apart from being able to focus praise) for secular marriage marriage segnen.Alle there are people who performed in the category of secular forth in California Family Code, Section 400 (see Appendix) established procedures, noting that everyone in the state of California took the civil marriage performed. The right environment for Episcopal clergy is the blessing of understanding Ehe.Das Episcopal Church today is that thanks to an extension of the bishop’s pastoral ministry. I must ask you to inform all the blessings of same-fortzusetzen.Paare which has been presented under the auspices of the California Supreme Court marriage with premarital counseling together as a couple even seeking marriage or blessing of marriage in the Episcopal Church needed. It should be understood as a ministry of the Church to encourage marriage werden.Ich Episcopalians, clergy and laity who as a volunteer deputy marriage commissioner. There are more than 4,000 same-sex civil marriage in a short time in the city of San Francisco alone and the city planned to ask for help in meeting demand. I intend this in my initial opportunity to volunteer. This will be a sign of confirmation of Supreme Court decisions of our diocese. With clerical needs of the city are not allowed to wear the collar when the seat in a secular marriage. (For more information on how to be represented, see the attached appendix.) Everyone welcome blessing of civil marriages in the Diocese of California are free to the same level of public (eg advertisements) to use.
This is a temporary measure as the Episcopal Diocese of California and continued our journey in the context of this prophetic opportunity by the California Supreme Court decision is available. I have started the process to achieve a more studied and permanent solution to lead the Episcopal clergy same-sex marriages in this diocese. This process involves the formation of a panel of diocesan clergy recommendations about how to move toward equality of marriage rites for all people. These recommendations are used throughout the diocese, which will be discussed at the official diocesan policy.
In the coming days I will announce my public opposition to the initiative to cancel the decision of the Supreme Court. Diocese of California ad about 17 Published in June celebrating the Supreme Court ruling and inviting same-sex couples in our churches for pre-marital counseling and food in the community of faith.
As usual, I welcome your wisdom, your insights and your input on this issue, and I continue my commitment to a church that sees all the sons of God through the same eyes that God does not work.
